Located in Combs Hall, the UMW Archaeology Lab is a fully functioning collections management, research, and teaching space, providing students the opportunity to work with artifacts and learn general lab procedures.
About The Lab
The UMW Archaeology Lab manages multiple collections generated over more than 40 years of archaeological research, which are available for study, loan, and student research projects.

Management of the UMW Archaeology Lab became a separate position from the Center Director in 2006. Dr. Douglas W. Sanford, then professor of historical archaeology, became the first lab director until his retirement in 2017. Dr. Lauren K. McMillan took over as the Lab Director and assistant professor of historical archaeology until her transition to Director of Cultural Resources at Virginia State Parks in 2023. Beginning Fall 2023, Dr. Katherine G. Parker has served as the current Lab Director.
